ITS ALL ABOUT ACTION SPORTS IN ISLINGTON.
The world's first ever action sports P.E based programme is being introduced into 10 Islington schools at key stage level 4. The Government, working alongside Islington has decided to introduce a 10 weeks action course to ensure that children are exercising more.
The idea behind this is encourage more children to increase their level of physical activity and improve overall P.E class and school Attendance.
The Press day at Samuel Rhodes School, Islington on Tuesday 11th July 2006 proved to be a success. The children genuinely enjoyed themselves and they learnt that sports and exercise does not have to be boring. Rather than the conventional sports of football, basketball etcetera, children can now learn to surf, snowboard and skateboard.
The presentation was very organised and in the words of Paul Knipe (Director of Kaos Brands in action) " A way to teach Kids to balance on the boards and learn to keep fit". The day started off with a video of various skateboarding and snowboarding exercises to enable the children to get an idea of what they were about to learn. This was followed by them learning to balance on the indo boards and cushions before trying out on the real skateboards. Head coach Kevin Parrott and Vans pro skater Sam Bruce were at hand to render any assistance.
In the words of Hayden and Darrel (Samuel Rhodes School) both aged 15, "We enjoyed it and will definitely do it again". All in all, it was a very fun day for everyone.
The Action Sports in school will commence fulltime from the new school term in September. You can keep up to date with the progress of the kids taking part by visiting www.actionsportsinschools.wordpress.com or call the School Sport Coordinator Declan Hamblin on 020 7288 8936/2114 |
